Second floor of the castle for 8 people
We (Tom and Katherine van Herwaarden) bought Château de Peyrolles in 2007. We sold our house in Apt in order to buy this wonderful castle with the idea of renting out gites here. The renovation lasted for a few years, but we always look back with pleasure on those working holidays together with our children, Lorenz and Manoe and our dog, Dingo.
We have five gîtes accommodating 2 to 8 people and each has its own kitchen. We deliver bread in the morning free of charge and once a week in high season we organise a table d’hôte for our guests.
Château de Peyrolles is a private estate measuring some 15,000 acres. It is situated in the country and yet is only a short distance from Apt (1km), a lively Provençal town which dates back to Roman times with the reputation of having the best market in Provence. The castle has been restored to its original state and is a combination of authentic Provençal tradition with modern comfort.
The estate enjoys a panoramic view over the Durance valley. The garden surrounding the castle is approximately 3.500 acres. There are two communal swimming pools, a trampoline, a space to play badminton and a swing but there are also many peaceful places to sit and contemplate. The gîtes are spread out over the estate and each has a private patio or garden. The estate also boasts a 15th-century watchtower, an old Roman fountain and a wash-house. Behind the castle there is a beautiful forest of some 10.000 acres and some trees that are centuries old.
The origins of Château de Peyrolles date back to Roman times. At that time there were 12 similar Roman villas in the region of Apt. The current castle dates from the late 16th century and was built on what remained of one of the villas, "Villa Peyrolis". Over the centuries, several aristocratic families have lived in this castle (e.g. Saint Pons, Sollier, Astruc, de Simony and Carcassonne).
Apt lies in the heart of the Luberon, surrounded by many well-known Provençal towns and villages such as Gordes, Lourmarin, Ménerbes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Saignon, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence. The central position of Apt means that you can go on an excursion in the morning and relax by the pool in the afternoon. Apt and the surrounding area offer a multitude of leisure activities including kayaking (Fontaine de Vaucluse, 10km), climbing (Buoux, 5 km), horse riding (Apt, 5 km), biking on the Mont Ventoux (bike rental in Apt), walking and wine tasting. There is also the Provençal market (Apt every Saturday morning) and the L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue antique market. And of course there are lots of restaurants in the area that we can recommend.
Katherine is a wonderfully attentive host on her beautiful property. She looked after us and made us feel at home. Its a beautiful place--a rustic gem in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. We feel very lucky to have stayed there. It was simply wonderful.
We had an amazing 3 days at Château de Peyrolles! Between the pool, the views, the site, the lunches, the calm, the BBQs, and the kindness of Katherine, I'm not sure what we valued most. We stayed here with a group of 9 friends, for a wedding we attended in the region and this place was ideal for some nice & quiet 'cool down' from the wedding festivities, just being among friends and enjoying the good life. Katherine is very devoted to her guests and a very attentive person. A highly recommended place to stay!
What a fantastic time we had at Katherine and Tom's! The site is amazing, the castle beautiful and the region perfect for a spring or summer week end. We could even have a jump in one of the swimming pool. I recommend strongly the place!
